How the First Bisbee Tournament Began

Over 40 years ago, Robert ‘Bob’ Bisbee came up with a great idea to help the local fishing community in the then small fishing village of Cabo San Lucas. After a meeting with Luis Coppola, owner of a hotel called Finisterra located in Cabo, and its manager Bill Baffert, Bisbee planned to have a marling fishing tournament in the area.

With the help of John Doughty, a former employee of Bisbee’s, the Bisbee’s Black And Blue tournament began in 1980. Thanks to the event’s popularity, Cabo San Lucas went from a small fishing village to one of the most sought-after spots for fishing and tourism.

Three generations later, the Bisbee’s fishing tournaments are now part of the essence of this region.

Back to Its Glory

After the first few years, fishing in the area started to go off the charts, in part thanks to media coverage that spread quickly.

Demand was high enough for more tournaments, and the number of participating teams began to double. The tournaments grew in so much popularity that Bob enlisted the help of his son Wayne, who ten enlisted his sister Tricia and now manages the project.

For Bob, it was important to keep the value of family tied together to the event. Through their effort, they expanded the fishing competition into a second event that included marlin, dorado, and tuna – the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament. The second tournament’s popularity eventually led to a third event: the Bisbee Los Cabos Offshore Tournament.

A Treasure to the Bisbee Family & Los Cabos

Bob Bisbee sadly passed away in 2018. The family has tried to keep the same sense of humility to the tournament they’ve had since the beginning as a way of honoring the founder’s legacy.

After a difficult 2020, the Bisbee’s are prepared to host two new and exciting editions to their traditional tournaments. The Los Cabos Offshore Tournament (aka Little Bisbees) will take place on October 15 & 16, followed by the iconic Black & Blue Marlin Tournament scheduled for October 20, 21 & 22 in Cabo San Lucas.
